The formation of the Sierra Leone Chamber for Agribusiness Development is the outcome of an Agricultural Private Sector Forum APSeF, established in 2008, following a public consultation with the current Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security held soon after taking office, to propagate his Ministry’s policies and programmes and identify partners for their implementation. After several meetings of the forum and the development of an “An Integrated Programme for Promoting Private Sector Investment in Agriculture“it was decided to give the forum permanence by transforming it into a Chamber of Agriculture.
The Sierra Leone Chamber for Agribusiness Development was consequently incorporated on April 8th, 2009 as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act of the Republic of Sierra Leone. The Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) actively promoted and supported this initiative and in particular desired the new agricultural Chamber to establish strong links with women farmers, farming associations, cooperatives and small holder farmers.
Due to conflict of identity arising from misconceptions, the Board of the Chamber for Agribusiness Development has applied to the Administrator and Registrar General, for a change of name to the “ Sierra Leone Chamber for Agribusiness Delopment”; a name which better describes the mandate and mission of the organization and avoids confusion that had started occurring in the ascription of its activities.
